Before light bulbs were made, people used candles or oil lamps to light their homes. But Thomas Edison invented the first true light bulb that could be used in the home in 1879. It mattered because it made it much easier to see at night, allowing people to do things like reading, cooking, and playing games.
So, how do light bulbs work? Within every light bulb is a tiny shard of metal: the filament. When the light switch is flipped on, electricity passes through the filament, which causes the filament to heat up and emit light. The glowing filament is what produces the light we see.
There are a myriad of light bulb types these days. The most common mechanism of incandescent bulbs, are the traditional ones we use to know. There are also the fluorescent bulbs, which consume less energy and last longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs. Another type is LED bulbs, which are even more energy-efficient and are capable of lasting many years.
DiscussionNote: Trained on data until October 2023. Doing so can economically benefit us in terms of our electric bills and environmentally benefit society. LEDs are an ideal choice for energy-efficient lighting, as they consume considerably less electricity than incandescent bulbs and have a lifespan of up to 25 times longer.
When a light low wattage bulb burns out, replace it. Make sure to disconnect the light switch before removing the old bulb and putting in the new one. When the time comes to discard old light bulbs, it’s wise, if you’re able, to recycle them. Some stores and some recycling centers will take old light bulbs, which can then be disposed of properly and kept out of landfills.
